Northeast Zone Director of the American Racing Pigeon Union, Bill Desmarias invited me to attend a local auction held in New Bedford yesterday.
How could I say no!
There were about 15 pigeons up for auction with all bids starting at $100.
These are not your average birds off the street. These birds look like athletes that were built with power. Their average speed during a race can range from 40-90 mph.
Each pigeon being sold is accompanied by a pedigree chart, which gives the buyer all of the birds family and winning history.
Freddie Rivera (R) is the President of the American Racing Pigeon Union and flew up from Florida for the event.
The highest price paid at this auction was $350 for a single pigeon.
I was told that these are fairly low prices, often times prices can reach up to $10,000.
Many pigeons bought at the auction make their way home in empty beer cases.
Thanks to the Northeast Zone of the ARPU for teaching me so much more about the sport of pigeon racing.
